Can’t believe it’s been a year since Kendall wiped the floor with the rest of us, but here we are, ready for another year of the Bracket Challenge. With five teams in the field, there’ll be plenty to keep New England baseball fans busy this weekend, but if filling out a bracket will help you enjoy things even more, read on.
Month: May 2016
Previewing the 2016 D3 Tournament
Weekends like this are why I write. Nine New England baseball teams, who’ve had great seasons just to get this far, are one good weekend away from a trip to the College World Series. There’s just nothing else like it. We’ll take a look at the paths all nine of them have taken after the jump.
Breaking Down the D3 Tournament Selections
Last year, I was pretty charitable to the D3 Selection Committee. I thought deserving teams were left at home, but more as a function of the field being too small than the committee picking the wrong teams to fill it. This year, I’m not so sure. Let’s dig in.
Breaking Down the D2 Tournament Selections
Last year, it was the D3 selections that had everybody worked up. This year, D2 decided to hop in on the party too. I’m going to be more open with my opinions than usual below, but as always, if you’re angry or disagree, don’t feel the need to hold back in the comments or on twitter. First, I’ll walk through what I think was the committee’s reasoning, then I’ll offer some thoughts on it. Shall we?
Previewing the 2016 D1 Conference Tournaments
With May upon us, we’ve got a few weekends of D1 conference tournament action to look forward to. Up and down the Eastern seaboard, New England teams will be battling to make NCAA Tournament dreams come true. We’ll update this post with previews of all the postseason qualifers as things unfold.
Previewing the 2016 NESCAC Tournament
After winning titles in 2014 and 2015, Wesleyan enters this weekend’s NESCAC Tournament looking for Division III’s third three-peat of the season, something that’s never been done. The league’s three historical powers– Amherst, Trinity, and Tufts– will all be itching to wrest the trophy back for themselves. For the second straight year, they’ll head to Nashua’s Holman Stadium to punch New England’s final ticket to the D3 Tournament. Though it may be tough to follow up 2015, when not a single game was decided by more than three runs, it promises to be an exciting weekend.
Weekend Roundup — May 10, 2016
Our first real Championship Weekend didn’t disappoint, with four more teams punching D3 Tournament tickets in some great games of baseball. We’ll have more on them up by Tuesday evening, but for now, it’s a recap of the D1 and D2 action that provided plenty of drama on its own. Read on for more.
Previewing the 2016 Northeast-10 Tournament
It’s been three years since the Northeast-10 was represented at the Division II College World Series, and this year’s conference tournament will be the appetizer for the battle to get back there in two weeks’ time. Will Franklin Pierce or Southern New Hampshire take home a title and beef up their NCAA hosting resume in the process? Or will another team make a run to claim the league’s autobid? Read on for more about all four NECB teams competing.
Weekend Preview — May 6-8, 2016
Biggest weekend yet guys. A division to decide in the Ivy League, a three-way battle for the final playoff spot in the NE-10 Northeast, and five tournament tickets to punch in D3. Buckle up, and if you’re not playing in one, get yourself to a game.
Previewing the 2016 NAC Tournament
As in 2015, the Maine schools will make the long trek down to Castleton to contest the NAC title. The host Spartans swept to their second straight title a year ago, but three good teams will be itching to wrest that title away from them this time around. Tourney history, the pennant race, and capsules on all four competitors after the jump.
