Division III explodes onto the scene this weekend, with more than half of New England’s teams in action. It’s a deep region, with many of last year’s playoff teams returning talent and other teams waiting in the wings. Most of them have scheduled like they mean business, as you’ll see below, and it’ll prep them for what looks to be another year of tightly contested playoff chases and exciting conference tournaments. Here’s a conference-by-conference rundown of this weekend’s games.
After what had been a lackluster start to the year, Division I had an excellent showing this past weekend. With five teams taking on schools ranked in at least one poll, there were plenty of chances to make noise, and they took them. UConn and Rhody were the biggest winners, and a lot of others put in good shifts. In Division II, weather killed most of the scheduled action, but Franklin Pierce got another win down at Mercy. And in Division III, Mass Maritime picked up a pair of wins on their Florida trip. Continue reading
A handful of Division 3 teams have already kicked off their seasons, making their counterparts stuck in basketball gyms or on half-shoveled turf pretty jealous. Bates had a nice 4-2 showing in California, and a few others stand at .500 as we close in on the start of March.
We’ll have to wait a week for most teams to get going, but about a half dozen more will have started up by the end of this weekend. The region’s biggest presence is in Florida, but teams are also trekking down to New Jersey, Virginia, and North Carolina to find a field to play on. Here’s a look ahead to the action.
